Question Ruby on Rails?

Hi,

I've searched your forums, kb, and website and I don't see anything about Ruby or Ruby on Rails. Does that mean you don't support that development language/framework? I do have quite a bit of stuff in PHP5, but really like Ruby much better and have a few sites developed with it.

My current hosting provider has been having a lot of downtime and network/disk problems and it's getting unacceptable, so I'm looking around and someone recommended you guys.

Anyway, do you provide a server-wide version of Ruby and Rails or can I installed them in my own account? If I have to install them myself can all my domains share the one installation if I get a reseller account?
Thanks,
-J

Hello John,

Thanks for your interest in our services.

I am sorry to hear about the problems with your current host.

At this time we do not support Ruby on Rails. It is certainly a growing development language though and once it has matured a bit more and we see that the demand for it is at a reasonable level then we will consider adding it to our servers. We do however provide dual PHP platform support meaning we offer both PHP4 and PHP5. You can select the PHP build you wish to use on the fly.

Please let us know if you have any further questions

Ruby on Rails again

Now that a good half year has gone by since the last discussion about Ruby on Rails, have you thought any more about making it a standard feature?

Hi Dave,

Not really, as the number of requests we have had for it have not been high at all. At most we get a couple of requests per month for it.

We may look into it again in the future though once cPanel add full support for it

Just bumping this, as I wouldn't mind seeing some Ruby support in the near future.

Ruby on Rails isn't something we support at the moment. We have looked at it but it is very system resource intensive for the shared servers. We are launching Managed Virtual Server plans around February or March of next year so if you would like Ruby on Rails configured under one of those then this is not a problem. Likewise, if a Managed Server client would like Ruby on Rails installed we are happy to do that, as we have already done for a few clients already.

Just another bump for Ruby on Rails as I'd like to start developing in Ruby and it would be great to keep all my hosting account information with the 1 company.

If I have a premium reseller account does that mean I could easily add ruby on rails hosting?

Hi Gav,

My last reply above is still the position on this. Once we launch the Managed Virtual Servers you will be able to run Ruby on Rals using one of those if you wish, but not with a premium reseller account.

Ruby on Rails in Fantastico

Hello,

Ruby on Rails and Ruby Gems is on fantastico. I tried installing it but I get an error message and the server won't start when started. I have a reseller account. Should we use ruby on rails on our account or should we look for another host for this?

No, you won't be able to run RoR on a shared account.

Ruby on Rails is not an advertised or supported feature of any of our shared plans. Please see my last reply above for details

Hi,

Any further news on this? I'm looking to move my reseller account somewhere that provides both LAMP hosting and support for Ruby on Rails. Support for Django (the python framework) would also be good.

I see from your discussion earlier this year that there weren't any plans to support this on your shared reseller accounts. Is this still the case? You also mention that your managed virtual servers would be the way to go but I cannot find any information on these on your website. Any news on this?

Kind regards

Giles

Hi Giles,

We can offer this under a Managed Virtual Server (MVS) or a full Managed Server but not under the shared or reseller plans as it is far too system resource intensive.

We launched the Managed Virtual Server (MVS) platform back in April of this year (although it is not public on our website yet as we are trying to control the demand). It is designed as a stepping stone solution between a reseller plan and a full Managed Server. Currently we are sold out until the end of the month but drop me an email via chris@rochen.com and I will be happy to shoot you full details.

Please let us know if we can be of any further help

Question Perhaps now?

Just a followup to this thread since it's been awhile & ongoing...

Is RoR now offered on shared/reseller accounts? I'd like to install Redmine project management.

Perhaps using Passenger/modrails.

Thanks,
John
